Maicon Pereira, the Brazilian soccer player with Shakhtar Donetsk was killed in an automobile accident announced the club on Saturday. The 25-year old was killed after being involved in a car accident in Donetsk early Saturday morning. There was no further information released about the accident.
The club’s website released a statement that said Maicon had been a talented soccer player whose life was tragically ended. He was a friendly and open person, who loved life and always made it bright and positive, said the team statement.
The club expressed its condolences to Maicon’s family.
Following his youth playing at Flamengo and Fluminense in Brazil, Maicon become more widely known in the soccer world when he moved to Ukraine and joined Volyn Lutsk in 2009. He appeared in 65 matches for Lutsk and scored 37 goals.
He also netted three goals in eight matches while on loan with Steaua Bacharest in Romania, prior to moving to Shakhtar the champions of Ukraine in 2012.
Maicon’s opportunities to play on the first team at Donetsk became limited and when he died, he was on loan for one season with Illichivets Mariupol another Ukrainian club.
Because Maicon joined Shakhtar following the start of the season, the manager of Shakhtar, Mircea Lucescu decided he should be loaned out to Zorya for the first half of the year.
However, he was then registered by the Ukrainian top league as a member of Zorya and owned by the club, not on loan from Shakhtar. In September of 2012, he entered during the second half of the game against his former club Shakhtar. Zorya ended up losing the match by a score o 3-0.
Maicon should not be confused with Maicon Douglas Sisenando, his fellow Brazilian soccer player who is 32 years of age and played a long and successful career at Inter Milan and is currently playing for Serie A club AS Roma.
Word was released that late Saturday night or early Sunday, officials in Ukraine will release more information regarding the auto accident that killed Maicon.
